Katabasis Modena
Katabasis Modena is an associate centre operating in Emilia-Romagna since 2022, founded on the initiative of Marcello Palmieri, freediving and spearfishing instructor, who is also its manager.
The branch operates in line with the vision of Katabasis Freediving and Sailing: to promote freediving focused on wellbeing, awareness and respect for the sea, in contrast to a forced approach focused exclusively on overcoming depths, distances or times.
Freediving in Modena: pool activities and organization of sea trips
The Modena centre mainly operates in the swimming pool from September to May, organizing regular trips to the sea. In collaboration with the Komodo swimming pool, the following are organized:
- SSI Freediving courses, levels 1 and 2, weekend formula for small groups
- Courses for large groups
- Individual lessons
- Training sessions supervised by instructors 3 times a week
- Workshops dedicated to breathing and relaxation
During the year, the following are also offered:
– Sea practice for freedivers in Liguria and Tuscany
– Sustainable spearfishing courses
Courses, training sessions and workshops are held on a seasonal basis.

Marcello Palmieri, freediving and spearfishing instructor and, since 2025, head of activities at Katabasis Modena. The team of instructors consists of:
Silvio Orlandi, freediving instructor and IT expert.
Enzo De Angelis, currently completing his training to become an SSI Freediving Instructor specializing in activities with children.
The centre’s activities are carried out in line with the technical approach defined by Carlo Boscia.
Participation and Contacts
Freediving activities are aimed at adults and children who are members of the association and interested in developing a continuous technical program in Emilia-Romagna, with the opportunity to participate in sea activities organised by the Katabasis Freediving and Sailing headquarters in Baratti or during freediving and sailing cruises.
