Functional freediving for sailing is a training project born from the collaboration between two expert trainers and sailors: Luca Sabiu, ocean navigator, and Carlo Boscia, freediver.
The course is dedicated to those who want greater autonomy in managing manoeuvres and operational situations on board. It is not a traditional freediving course, nor is it a basic sailing course: it is a programme that integrates freediving and sailing skills with a practical objective.
Freediving and sailing with Carlo Boscia and Luca Sabiu: a concrete integration
Over time, by observing numerous real situations on dinghies and small and large cabin cruisers, Luca Sabiu and Carlo Boscia have identified a series of operational similarities between freediving and sailing.
A sailor who develops awareness of their inner state is more effective in managing maneuvers. On the other hand, a freediver who interprets the movement of the sea and moves with greater integration into the environment when freediving.
Freediving becomes a functional tool for sailing, not a separate activity.
Course objectives
The course is structured to:
- apply freediving techniques to the management of priorities, urgencies and emergencies on board
- recognize the areas of interaction between freediving and sailing
- learn through the simulation of real critical situations
- transfer usable operational tools and action protocols during navigation
At the end of the course, the SSI Freediving international certification will be issued.
Sailing and freediving: areas of application
The course, based on real-life experiences, uses breathing, relaxation and postural control techniques to support sailors in managing the most delicate or stressful phases of navigation, such as:
- managing a stuck anchor or refloating between 1 and 15 metres
- removing a rope from the propeller under controlled conditions
- tying knots underwater, bendings and parlats on ropes and chains for recovering objects
- inspecting the hull and emergency interventions with materials such as epoxy paste, turafalle or wooden cones
- dry and water exercises for breath control and relaxation
- analysis of the most common situations during navigation and identification of the conditions in which freediving and sailing become synergistic
The fundamental topics of freediving are also addressed: equipment, physiological variations, basic techniques and relationship with the aquatic environment.
Structure of the Freediving for Sailors course
Total duration: 23 hours.
- 2 online theory sessions (5 hours)
- 2 theory + pool sessions (6 hours)
- 1.5 days at sea with a sailing boat available (12 hours)
The activities at sea involve direct application during sailing, with analysis of the requirements of different types of boats.

- SSI Freediving international certification

Weekend di apnea e buona compagnia con Carlo e Andrea alla guida del nostro piccolo gruppo di 4 apneisti in cerca di consigli e correzioni per migliorare la tecnica e godersi appieno l’esperienza. Katabasis ci ha offerto grande professionalità, un approccio gentile e incoraggiante, oltre che efficace e divertente! L’esperienza si è conclusa domenica al lago dell’Accesa: natura bellissima e profondo senso di tranquillità, anche per chi di noi era alla prima esperienza di apnea in un lago ed era un po’ preoccupato! Da rifare appena possibile!!!

I took a level 1 freediving course which is the last one for this season. I really had a great time and getting used to with the deep sea, unlocking my new hobby. I couldn’t even believe that I did that Lol. I was so lucky to meet with other kind people too including Carlo and Marco. He is very patient and so supportive guiding us to score the best. My fav part is when they gave us the feedback after we got back from diving session. So that, the next day we can make it better, analyzing our experiences.
Insomma, I recommend this institution if ur looking for diving course that’d be fun and also qualified to learn freediving.

Carlo and his other instructors colleagues were excellent. He is very knowledgeable and has the gift of communication. He managed to get us all to improve on our depths and style of diving, which was fantastic, while keeping a friendly, low pressure and very enjoyable vibe. It was the last course of the season and we had a fairly broad range of skills amongst the divers, that any other instructor might have found challenging to manage but Carlo mastered it brilliantly and everyone was happy and had improved at the end. Definitely would recommend his courses. I’m already thinking about joining him for one of his spearfishing courses next year.

Un meraviglioso weekend di apnea per chiudere al meglio l’estate 2025. Un’esperienza all’insegna della natura, della profondità e della condivisione, resa possibile grazie a due bravissimi istruttori - Carlo e Andrea - che con la loro disponibilità, pazienza, professionalità, capacità di personalizzare l’approccio e con la loro simpatia hanno davvero fatto la differenza.

Ho seguito il pacchetto corso base di apnea + introduzione pesca subacquea con Carlo. È stata una settimana fantastica. Ho imparato molto sull'apnea, sull'oceano e su me stesso.

The spearfishing course with Carlo was an all-around great sea experience. Carlo is an extremely skilled and patient instructor who knows how to share his knowledge in a structured and hands-on way. Step by step, we covered all the essential topics – from diving and hunting techniques to fish species and their behavior, relevant regulations, and the right equipment.
One of the highlights was the immediate feedback after each session, which really helped with improving skills. Questions were always welcome, and I felt safe and well-supported throughout the course.
By the end, I felt well-prepared to go spearfishing on my own in a responsible and confident way. I’d be happy to dive with Carlo again in the future – highly recommended!

I have done the Freediving course with Carlo and Spearfishing with Marco. Both very nice people and I had a great time in the water despite problems with equalization. If you want to try either freediving or spearfishing I can recommend Carlo and Marco as your guides into the underwater world.

Carlo è un istruttore estremamente preparato e professionale, con anni di esperienza nel settore che traspare in ogni sua spiegazione e dimostrazione. La sua capacità di adattare l'allenamento alle esigenze specifiche di ogni apneista è notevole. A week ago I was able to participate in an SSI Advanced Freediver course at Katabasis. Carlo is a very patient and competent diving instructor. He imparts a wealth of knowledge in a very structured manner and guides you safely through all steps. He places great emphasis on safety and technique as the foundation for an intensive and positive experience in the water. He does all this with the greatest love for the sea and absolute enthusiasm for this kind of approach.

Ho appena finito il corso di primo livello di questa fantastica disciplina…è stato persino più emozionante di quanto già mi aspettassi. Ho imparato tanto, e sono soltanto all’inizio di questa avventura. Grazie mille a Carlo, bravissimo istruttore con un’esperienza di mare infinita e, non per ultimo, gran bella persona.
Durante il corso ho conosciuto altre splendide persone, con la mia stessa passione per il mare e tanta voglia di imparare. Condividere con loro le emozioni, la fatica e le gioie in mezzo al blu è stata veramente una figata!

In questa settimana ho imparato tantissimo L apnea, la vela, conoscere le stelle che in città non si possono ammirare come li, le canzoni dei vecchi tempi e la compagnia fantastica ricordi che resteranno a vita che mi fanno commuovere. Had chance to join 3 different courses in Jun-Jul'24, from basics of freediving & spearfishing to deeper steps of the SSI Lev1. Was a great experience, opening to me the wonderful Underwater World, with the precious help of a great instructor such as Carlo Boscia.
Highly professional approach, easy and friendly environment, with the right teaching balance between demanding & flexibility.
Equipment of the highest standards. Marvellous location such as the Baratti Gulf.
All those factors made the 2 weeks spent with Katabasis and Carlo a pure experience of happiness and harmony with the Sea World.
I'll definitely continue practicing freediving, learning as much as I can, and definitely returning to train & learn with Carlo and Katabasis whenever I'll have chance.

I can highly recommend Katabasis Freediving. Carlo Boscia is extremly knowlegeable regarding the technical and mental aspects of freediving, which help the diver to progress and to enjoy the diving even more. He is very attentive and notices the tiniest moves which allows him to provide the divers with accurate helpful feedback. Carlo is very good with people, fun to be with and you can tell that he deeply cares about the sea and the environment. While my husband and I were spending time in the water with Carlo, our teenage daughters were having fun enjoying the beautiful beaches at Baratti. Staying in the lovely medieval village Suvereto at "Il Chiostro" made our dream -freediving and family holiday in Tuscany complete. Coming back for sure! ☺️

Una delle nostre prime esperienze di apnea in mare. Un organizzazione competente e professionale in un clima amichevole e "di gruppo". Siamo stati seguiti in ogni singolo passaggio delle diverse tecniche effettuate con estrema attenzione dagli istruttori Carlo e Marcello, capaci di metterti a proprio agio e trasmetterti la loro passione. Il posto (Baratti) è semplicemente incantevole. La macchia selvaggia di vegetazione che si staglia sul blu del mare, l'Elba a portata di mano, all'orizzonte Capraia e, nelle giornate limpide come la nostra, la silhouette della Corsica. Davvero consigliato !!

Io e i miei compagni, guidati dal nostro istruttore, siamo stati da Katabasis per 3 giorni intensi nel blu.
Intensi perché non abbiamo mai smesso di imparare a conoscere, vivere e amare il mare da un lato, mentre dall’altro abbiamo potuto acquisire nuove conoscenze apneistiche e perfezionare quelle già acquisite.
Carlo è un grandissimo professionista in grado di scardinare preconcetti o abitudini sbagliate e riesce a farlo perché dalla sua ha una grande empatia con la quale riesce ad essere un motivatore accogliente e pieno di stimoli e risposte per ognuno di noi.
Con Carlo ho anche finalizzato e raggiunto un obiettivo tanto desiderato, la certificazione Freediving di 3 Livello SSI, un percorso che mi ha permesso di affrontare e acquisire tecniche di apnea profonda e soprattutto tutte le nozioni teoriche e pratiche di sicurezza per me e per i miei futuri buddies. Sono un apneista che stà per conseguire il secondo livello, e il nostro onnipresente istruttore decide di farci vivere questa esperienza con Carlo, che secondo lui rispecchia gli stessi suoi valori nell'apnea....Baratti è un luogo riservato e protetto dalle persone da cui lo vivono quotidianamente, e in Carlo si percepisce perfettamente la medesima dimensione, attento e dedicato non solo al luogo ma ad ogni apneista che porta in mare e non solo per professionalità che ovviamente lo precede, ma soprattutto per la sua capacità di dedicare la cosa giusta all'apneista giusto e di conseguenza alla persona .
Sono stati quattro giorni emozionanti, introspettivi, e spensierati e aver accomunato queste tre cose fà si che resterà un ricordo indelebile .

Sono una neofita dell'apnea e ho partecipato ad un weekend di apnea organizzato dal nostro istruttore insieme a Carlo. Appena giunti al porto, ci siamo resi conto immediatamente di trovarci in un luogo straordinario. La sensazione di autenticità e selvaggia bellezza ci ha avvolto, riscaldando i nostri animi sin dall'inizio. Carlo ci ha condotti attraverso i suoi luoghi, trasmettendoci sin da subito la sua profonda passione per il mare, facendoci apprezzare e comprendere tutte le sue sfaccettature. Ci ha colpito molto la sua capacità di comprendere le esigenze di ciascuno di noi, questo ha creato un'empatia immediata e un'intesa che ha reso l'esperienza ancora più speciale e divertente. Abbiamo alternato sessioni tecniche e sessioni ricreative dove abbiamo potuto perfezionare la nostra tecnica e imparare a tuffarci in sicurezza, godendo del meraviglioso ambiente marino circostante. Questa esperienza è stata meravigliosa e ancora oggi, nei nostri occhi brilla quel blu infinito mentre l'anima sorride. Consiglio vivamente questa esperienza a tutti gli amanti del mare e dell'apnea.

Ho partecipato al raduno internazionale di apnea in Sicilia, con Carlo Boscia istruttore di apnea.
Fare apnea all’inizio non facile.
Ma Carlo è davvero bravo, ci ha insegnato tutto in modo semplice ed è riuscito a mettere tutti noi in condizione di poter capire, imparare e divertirci.

Carlo è un vero professinista.
Ho passato con lui 4 giorni pieni e coinvolgenti, facendo pesca subacquea all'Elba e dintorni insieme ad altri apneisti. Ho trovato in lui grande preparazione ed un forte rispetto per il mare.
Sono stato catapultato nei video di pesca su YouTube che mi piacciono tanto, ma stavolta il protagonista ero io!

Carlo is a fantastic teacher and a great person! I've taken the SSI level 2 course (Advanced Freediver) with him and loved every moment of it. His patience and personal attention have helped me make big steps forward in my freediving technique, and I can't wait to go back into the beautifully blue depths of the Gulf of Baratti.

Una bellissima esperienza......non tutti gli bravi apneisti sanno come insegnare l'apnea...Carlo è forte su entrambi i fronti ed è molto esperto. Direi un istruttore eccellente e impegnatissimo sia per la parte tecnica sia per la parte emozionante e talassofila. Lavora sempre in gruppi piccoli per dedicare tutta la sua attenzione ad ogni allievo. Poi il Golfo di Baratti è molto bello; un posto veramente prezioso.

Ho chiesto a Katabasis di poter fare un corso di freediving "famigliare", due adulti e due ragazzi, ed è stato davvero importante e incredibile per noi poterlo fare, abbiamo imparato insieme la tecnica e abbiamo condiviso la bellezza del lago e del mare; guidati da Carlo abbiamo imparato un nuovo modo di vivere l'acqua, unico e naturale.
Il corso è un giusto mix di teoria e pratica, con la comunicazione appropriata dell'importanza della parte teorica per poter vivere l'acqua in sicurezza.

È un piacere essere in questo posto meraviglioso e imparare da Carlo che riesce ad inquadrarti molto bene e farti fare i gusti steps e a trasmetterti il suo amore per il mare e la natura in generale. c'è anche possibilità di alloggiare in ostello e quindi conoscere nuovi amici con cui fare apnea e risate.

Ho fatto un workshop di pesca in apnea con Carlo, non posso che essere contento, nonostante la durata del workshop sia stata di pochi giorni ho appreso così tanto da lui in termini di pesca, conoscenza che non avrei raggiunto in un breve-medio periodo da autodidatta, quindi super consigliato
Nota aggiuntiva, Carlo ama il mare e lo si percepisce dal rispetto che ha per esso!

Un corso professionale, uno dei migliori istruttori, amichevole, serio, preparato, con una grande esperienza, vive il mare a 360°, quando me ne hanno parlato lo hanno descritto con una parola "lui è ACQUA".
Apnea primo livello, una bellissima esperienza un bel gruppo di persone piacevoli, bellissima località.
Un'avventura che non si dimentica.
Dopo una breve introduzione in acque confinate si svolge tutto in mare. Pochi giorni dove si ottengono grandi progressi e soddisfazioni personali. Un primo livello che ti mette alla prova.

Ho appena concluso un corso di apnea di secondo livello ed un workshop di pranayama abbinato all'apnea nel meraviglioso golfo di Baratti con katabasis. È stata un'esperienza meravigliosa Carlo è stato un Maestro di altissimo livello la sua competenza, pignoleria e l'amore che ha per il mare mi hanno permesso di raggiungere risultati inaspettati. Chi ama il mare e l'apnea katabasis è il posto giusto. Un ringraziamento particolare a Sara insegnante di pranayama che ha saputo fondere lo yoga alle esigenze dell' apnea , bravissima. Grazie di cuore a tutti.

Ho fatto il corso Freediving Level 1 - SSI a fine ottobre 2022 avendo già conoscenze parziali in materia.
Mi sono trovato benissimo. Istruttori molto qualificati, simpatici ed attenti. Corso ottimamente strutturato; ho molto apprezzato il corretto bilanciamento tra teoria e pratica, con estremo riguardo nei confronti della sicurezza e attenzione a trasmettere un sano approccio al mare ed al mondo acquatico nella sua interezza.
Carlo e Luca sono stati molto efficaci nell'insegnamento e mi hanno sempre fatto sentire a mio agio durante le lezioni. Il fatto che sono persone naturalmente ed umanamente portate a creare un ambiente familiare, informale e molto genuino favorisce l'apprendimento e rende l'esperienza davvero molto piacevole nel suo complesso.
Consigliatissimo per chi vuole muoversi per la prima volta in acqua e per chi vuole affinare la propria conoscenza in materia grazie ad un corso strutturato e svolto da professionisti.

Era da molto che volevo fare un bel corso pratico di pesca sub. Girando su internet ho trovato questa scuola e avendo già un brevetto di secondo livello di apnea SSI mi sono detto "perché no!?".
Premetto che cerco di pescare da almeno 3anni sempre con scarsissimi risultati nonostante apnee e profondità non così mediocri. Ma niente!! Non riuscivo proprio a prendere niente!!
Finalmente incontro il mitico Carlo Boscia che con tantissima pazienza mi inizia alla nobile arte della pesca sub. Super paziente e molto bravo a trasmettere questa passione con un occhio attento anche alla sostenibilità, cosa molto apprezzata.
Le lezioni si tengono nella splendida cornice del golfo di Baratti. Primi due giorni pieni di pratica e teoria. Cose fino ad ora soltanto male apprese attraverso qualche video si tramutano presto in realtà!! Carlo vi porterà a spasso tra i mari con il suo gommone e pazientemente vi insegnerà alcune tra le più efficaci tecniche di pesca in apnea.
Il terzo giorno si è pure andati a pescare e non ci crederete(ma ovviamente ho fotodocumentato il tutto!!)ho preso un pesce!!! Ragazzi che emozione!!
In conclusione il corso è stato molto utile e sicuramente mi ha fatto crescere ancora di più l'attrazione verso questo tipo di pesca. Consigliato moltissimo per chi ha già delle basi di apnea e si vuole affacciare al mondo della pesca sub e per chi non ha delle basi di apnea sicuramente Carlo saprà insegnarvi molto bene!!

Una esperienza unica dal punto di vista ricreativo, umano e di crescita personale.

This past week I completed a 4 day free diving course to get my level 1 SSI certification, and I stayed with Carlo and Emma at their hostel. This experience with katabasis freediving would have been one of the best trips of my life even if we did not freedive in the mediterranean sea, because the course was in a awesome Italian town in a beautiful area of Tuscany right next to touristy sites like the ancient ruins of populonia, and the beautiful gulf of Baratti, plus the cost of the freediving course included 3 amazing home cooked Italian meals each day(made by Emma an amazing chef who ran a restaurant in Genova for 25 years) and the company and amazing life stories of the owners, Carlo and Emma, made every second of the trip enjoyable and interesting.
In addition to that, you can learn to free dive or spearfish the mediterranean with a world class instructor. Carlo's freediving course took me from someone who had little knowledge of the sport, to a diver capable of rescuing a drowning diver 10 meters (33 feet) underwater and a diver who can reach 20 meters (65 feet) underwater in one breath. The instruction is amazing and there is no pressure to push past your limits.
With all of that combined, this experience with Katabasis freediving can be the trip of a life time for anyone who speaks English, Spanish, or Italian just a few if the many languages the instructor, Carlo, fluently speaks.
Overall, an amazing freediving adventure trip in tuscany italy.

Quando la Vita porta le persone giuste sul proprio cammino. E qui è proprio il caso di dirlo... Non potevo trovare Istruttore migliore per formare il mio cammino come apneista.

In the intervening years I have taken a Level 2 course with Carlo, and return to dive with him every chance I get. I continue to admire his ability to help freedivers of all levels to grow thanks to his extensive experience and his attention to detail. He gives a great deal of personal attention to each student, and his emphasis on the experience and not on the numbers we are achieving aligns with my own interests. I feel pushed to do my best and to grow, but there is no pressure to accomplish specific goals other than continuing to improve my technique, relaxation and enjoyment. The increase in depth is a natural outgrowth of this positive approach. Thank you Carlo.
I took the Freediving Level 1 course, which lasted three days. There was only one other student, so we got a lot of personal attention. Carlo (the owner and instructor) immediately made us feel relaxed and at ease, and his experience and confidence inspired both of us to make enormous progress, not just in depth, but in comfort and relaxation. He pushes you to do your best, but is also patient and supportive, allowing each of us to progress at our own pace, offering very precise feedback for each of us after each dive. We were responsible for buddying for each other from the surface, so each of us would learn from both our own mistakes, but also Carlo's corrections for the other student, which was very effective in helping us progress rapidly. I really appreciated his emphasis on fundamental skills - he is much more interested in helping us make clean dives than deep dives, and this allowed me to really relax and enjoy my time in the water. The result of this confidence and relaxation allowed me to double my personal best depths in both free immersion and constant weight, but this never felt like Carlo's goal, and I think that is an important lesson in itself.
As a very important side note, it was a pleasure to spend three days with Carlo. He's really fun and relaxed, with tons of stories to tell but also curious and interested in the world and his students. I can't wait to dive with him again.

After having done my Level I and II course with Carlo, when his school was still on Elba Island, this year I decided to finally come back and dive. I did a workshop with him and 4 other students. It was magical. The place he chose for accomodation, the food his girlfriend cooked (absolutely amazing), his lessons, the diving. I do not know any other teacher of freediving, but I am very, very confident in saying, that Carlo has set the bar super high for everyone else. He has the calmest, kindest but at the same time most focussed mindset and he is really able to make every student with his or her issues, goals or fears heard and comfortable. I trust him a 100% in the water. Carlo know's what he is doing, whether it's underwater, teaching or boathandling. It does not matter, whether you'll do a workshop on a certain topic, a fun dive or a course: You can be sure to come home very grounded and calm, with a lot of progress in your pocket and a smile on your face. I am already excited for the next workshop or cruise I'll do with him! You're an amazing teacher, Carlo!

If there is a definition of a perfect instructor, It would be for Carlo, i had the best 3 days of my life under water with carlo, he not only is an excellent Freediver but also a very good and experienced teacher. He could easily understand the mentality of his students and would plan his methods of teaching based on that. I always felt safe underwater when he’s around and eventually i pushed my limits to 15m. Moreover he’s so respectful to the environment and the marine life so I’d definitely recommend him for different courses.

I had a free diving course for 4 days. Although I had little to no experience in water I managed to reach depths of 10 meters. Carlo is both patient and very experienced. Would absolutely recommend to anyone learning free diving techniques.

In a group we booked two days of freediving. In the morning we had some training on the rope and in the afternoon was recreational diving. Carlo is not only an experienced diver but also a very good coach with an eye for details and proper technique. In the morning sessions I really could learn a lot and the afternoons were used to relax and discover in an adventurous way the sea and island.
We had a great time and I will definitely come back!

Ho fatto il corso di apnea, nella sede di recco. Carlo e la sua compagnia sono stati molto professionali e attenti a correggermi i difetti maturati nel fai da te. Ora compenso con più serenità. Grazie ragazzi. Spero di ritrovarvi presto

Avevo poche e confuse nozioni di apnea ed una sola certezza i pesci (quelli tutti uguali con le pinne) sono più veloci di te. In una settimana in barca Carlo ha messo a punto la mia tecnica e mi ha aperto un grande mondo che si chiama mare. Poi grazie ai sui insegnamenti ho anche preso il mio primo pesce 🙂 ...il tutto in gran relax e tanta convivialità. Super consigliato.
