HISTORICAL NOTES
Montefiascone is a small town of about 15,000 inhabitants crossed by the Cassia state road and marks the 100th kilometers of the Via Francigena. From its 633 meters above sea level, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Bolsena and, on clear days, you can see the Tyrrhenian Sea and Mount Argentario.
The Rocca dei Papi and the Cathedral of Santa Margherita are the characteristic features of the Montefiascone landscape.
The Cathedral of Santa Margherita, with its majestic dome, was commissioned by Alessandro Farnese in the 15th century. Numerous artists participated in the creation of this work, including Antonio Sangallo and Bramante, who was responsible for the octagonal shape of the Basilica.
The Rocca dei Papi links its origins, development and decline to Montefiascone’s relations with various popes. Built to strengthen defences against barbarian attacks, it was favoured by popes who, forced to flee besieged Rome, chose it as their place of exile.
